Warrawong: Home of the Platypus
Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is the only confirmed home of platypus on mainland South Australia. What's more, a breeding colony call the Sanctuary home, so there will be platypus on the property for generations to come.
There are 5 distinct habitats, on the 28 acre Sanctuary, which means you will also see a range of Australian native animals in their natural surrounds.
Koalas, kangaroos, bettongs, potoroos... all free-range across the property, as do 106 species of birds. Warrawong is a microcosm of the Australian bush and a Garden of Eden for inhabitants and guests alike. Many animals have been rescued and given a forever-home at the Sanctuary.
The reason behind the abundance of life at Warrawong is the world's-first feral-proof fence. Completed in 1982, the 2 metre high, electrified fence has protected Australian native animals from the devastation brought about by predatory foxes and cats. Warrawong is a unique property, as it is a "man-made" environment, starting life as a dairy in 1969. The rehabilitation of the land, from pasture to nature, is truly inspirational.
Warrawong offers a range of opportunities to see and interact with Australian wildlife. Guided dawn, day, and dusk tours, plus wildlife shows, and behind-the-scenes encounters are all ways in which you can meet and fall in love with Australia's amazing animals.
Located in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, Warrawong is only a 20 minute drive from the Adelaide CBD, although it feels a world away when you're here. Better still, the Wildlife Sanctuary is centrally located, only 10 minutes from the popular tourist destination of Hahndorf. In other words, it is extremely easy to add Warrawong to any itinerary taking place in the Adelaide Hills.
