Step back in Time 1,650 million years at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in the most ancient part of South Australia’s Flinders Ranges.
A privately owned 610 square km conservation reserve located in the spectacular northern Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola is a multi-award winning property with Advanced Ecotourism accreditation and justifiably South Australia’s premier ecotourism destination. Its unique geological, scenic and ecological significance is recognised in the Arkaroola Protection Act (2012) of SA Parliament.
University Professor and Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson called Arkaroola ”a giant outdoor geological museum” due to its complex geology with its ancient granites formed up to 1,600 million years ago, a billion years before the rest of the Flinders Ranges was created, extinct thermal pools and geysers and current day radioactive hot springs. Our signature Ridge Top Tour takes visitors through this amazing landscape culminating at Sillers Lookout, overlooking the 1,000 metre deep Yudnamutana Gorge, Lake Frome salt lake and the plains. It provides a breathtaking view of the Freeling Heights, a magnificent ring of saw toothed blue mountains fringing the Mawson Plateau, a rarely visited wilderness of pristine springs and giant rocky tors.
Guests can enjoy a range of activities including scenic flights over Arkaroola, Lake Frome, or further afield to Lake Eyre and the north, self drive and guided 4WD tours, bushwalking, night tours from our 2 astronomical observatories and enjoying watching native animals in their own habitat.
Arkaroola has three types of motel accommodation ranging from budget friendly rooms to the more comfortable and spacious. We also have self contained cottages, a caravan park with powered sites and a large area for bush camping.
Facilities include a shop with basic supplies, fuel and garage for minor repairs, WiFi, swimming pool and a private airstrip.
