After the atomic test program concluded, the British military went on to conduct a series of “minor” trials with nuclear warheads in the early 1960s. Nearly 700 trials of air and land missile strikes were tested over the decade. They released 100kg of radioactive and toxic elements on Anangu land. These trials were conducted in great secrecy, with only select officials knowing what was happening in the Australian Outback. Now you can learn for yourself this hidden part of Australia’s history. The full day tour begins at Ceduna Airport, where we depart on a scenic flight over the Great Victorian Desert and the testing grounds before landing at Maralinga Airstrip (long enough to land the space shuttle on). At the airstrip, we join a guided bus tour of the testing grounds to stand on Ground Zero.
