For 3.5 hours you'll venture deep into the forest to discover the traditional Maori's connection to the area and the spiritual respect they have for the giants that are still growing in the forest. The Waipoua Forest is alive with an abundance of flora and fauna including various bird species and the giant, ancient kauri trees.
Meeting Te Matua Ngahere, or The Father of the Forest as he is known, is an experience unlike any other and one of the highlights of the tour. Believed to be the oldest kauri tree in the world, it is between 2,500 and 3000 years old and will be greeted by your guide as an old friend. Another highlight is seeing The Lord of the Forest; Tane Mahuta. Believed to be between 1,000 and 2,500 years old, though not as old, Tane Mahuta is said to be the largest kauri tree in existence.
