Explore two of the world’s last unspoiled wilderness areas. In Iceland, discover a land of fire and ice, where the landscapes comprise volcanic craters, extinct lava lakes, glacial fields, majestic waterfalls, rivers, and geysers. Each region of Iceland has its natural appeal for nature, bird and history lovers, and the little-visited Vestfjords where the land meets the sea in the most dramatic fashion, is no exception.
Exploring this rugged peninsular at Iceland’s remote northwest tip offers awesome vistas of mountains, fjords, and towering cliffs. Cruising across the Denmark Strait, and over the Artic Circle, the Quark Expedition team will prepare you for the adventure that awaits in Northeast Greenland.
Located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, Greenland is the world’s largest island. Seasons in Greenland are different to the seasons you know back home. In Greenland, there is a short summer and a long winter. Short and changeable, Greenland’s summer starts in June and finishes in early September. In this time, the sea ice breaks up and the fjords are decorated with magnificent floating icebergs. Flowers bloom and the wildlife comes out to play. Birds fly and the sea is alive with whales and fish. Greenlander’s hike, bike, kayak, and sail over the newly exposed terrain.
During your visit, enjoy Zodiac cruises and shore visits to several locations. The expedition team will also keep a look out for grazing muskoxen, as 40% of the world’s muskoxen population lives in Northeast Greenland National Park. Sailing through Scoresbysund, the birthplace of many icebergs, you’ll immediately see why it is regarded as the most beautiful fjord system on the planet. At the entrance of the sound lies East Greenland’s most northerly community, Ittoqqortoormiit, where there is opportunity to meet the Inuit people and learn about their way of life. Here, you may also have the chance to see the Northern Lights dancing across the sky if the night sky is bright and clear.
